Windows & Doors Brainstorming

For my new work I plan to make a drawing of a girl hiding in a corner as in the next room a sibling and parent are fighting. The parent and sibling are silhouettes in a pale room. I plan to draw them so what is going on is up for the viewers interpretation. The girl is sitting in a corner in the next room, which is dark and empty except for her so the focus is totally on her. Visiting Artist Hamlett Dobbins

This is my favourite piece by Hamlett Dobbins because of the energy that the piece transmits. The patterns in the burst and in the background contrast so much that in a way, they almost seem to match. I also like his choice in colour. This seems to tie in with his works not as much as his other pieces. There are multiple levels that attract the eye of the viewer and many more straight lines then his normal work. Unfortunately, I missed the opportunity to ask Hamlett a question (as he left), but if he were still here, I'd ask him how he was able to create a painting simply based on the temperature of a day. I don't understand that concept.

Blindfold Drawings

Today in class we drew with blindfolds on. The idea was to draw a place from childhood that meant a lot to us. The first thought going through my mind when I heard that we were going to have to do this was along the lines of, "Oh hell no, I can't do this. She won't even be able to tell what it's supposed to be." Once drawing began, the blindfold made me stop and visualize exactly what i wanted and where. I had to picture where everything was in order to begin. Yes it still ended askew when the blindfold came off, but in my personal opinion, stopping to think helped it not be totally unrecognizable. I tried to build from basics and figure out just the shape of the room in relation to the paper. After that, I started adding in the people and objects that gave the room the feeling I was hoping for. I think by the end I was going slower with the blindfold on so I could make sure what I was doing could be closer to what I saw in my head. However despite all these efforts, this was a bit of a far cry from what I saw in my head; faces were across the room from their heads and my favorite chair in the room can defy gravity in the image. Though for my eyes closed, I think I'll still give myself a pat on the back for being able to tell it was a chair when my eyes opened. The image is extremely different from my drawings of the past, as this is in cartoon unlike my charcoal sketches which go for a more realistic approach.
